Second Annual Safe and Secure Schools Conference

You are invited to attend the Second Annual Safe and Secure Schools Conference sponsored by MCSA Outreach, MASSP, and EDU-SAFE.   The focus of this year's conference will be on the following topics: Student Searches:  MSIP Violence Prevention Requirments;  Responding to Cyber Bullying, Cell Phones, and other Electronic Devices with helpful tips you can share with parents; and Preventing and Responding to Inappropriate Teacher Behavior.

Suggested Attendees:  Superintendents, Principals, Assistant Principals, Safety Coordinators, and School Resource Officers (post certification hours will be awarded)

The registration fee is $115.00 per person.  The fee includes lunch, handout materials, and "a free DVD on Student Searches that has a $100.00 value."

Facilitators
  • Penney Rector serves as the Director of Legal Services for the Missouri Council of School Administrators and provides legal assistance to members of MAESP and MASA.   In addition, Penney serves as the legislative coordinator for the school Administrators Coalition.   Prior to joining MCSA in 2002, Penney served as an Assistant Attorney General with the Office of the Missouri Attorney General

  • Judy Brunner is a former teacher and principal at the elementary, middle, and high school level. Dennis Lewis is a former director of school policing for an urban/suburban school district.  They are co-founders of EDU-SAFE, LLC and together have have over 50 years of experience in providing safe school training, information and procedures for students and staff.

The DVD provides administrators with strategies and techniques for safely conducting student searches.  It is designed to minimize personal and professional liability, as well as parent complaints alleging that a student search was unwarranted or improperly conducted. The accompanying Facilitator's Guide includes check sheets to assist in determing when the threshold of reasonable suspicion is reached, reminders for how to properly and safely conduct the search, and tips for constructing a detailed report on the event.

This training DVD can be viewed individually or in a group setting and is ideal as a refresher for annual staff development or for use with new administrators or for staff members who occasionally act in a temporary leadership position.  Included in the DVD are elementary and secondary school vignettes illustrating various strategies and techniques.
