Legal Academy for School Principals
Topics for this year include:
Schools, the Flu and the Law: Legal Issues in Responding to Communicable Diseases - Join us as we discuss the legal obligations of the building administrator and provide practical "day -to-day" advice on what to do when you learn that students or employees have a communicable disease. What steps must you take to ensure the safety of those in the building? Who must be notified? What information can or must be shared?
Texting, Sexting and Use of Social Media: Legal Issues that Arise From Student Use of Ever Advancing Technology - Technology is advancing quickly and is readily available to students. School administrators must be prepared to address the issues that arise as a result of student use of these technologies. Texting, sexting and the use of social media seem to be exploding in our student population. What concerns do these technologies pose for building administrators, and how best can we address these concerns?
How and When to Conduct Student Searches: Parameters and Guidelines for Building Administrators - When, where, why, and how should a student search be conducted? We will discuss both the practical and legal issues that arise when a building administrator decides to search a student.
Student Discipline Hearings: How Did We Get Here and What Do We Do Now? - What is a student discipline hearing? When is a hearing necessary? What are the responsibilities of the building administrator in the hearing process? We will discuss the "nuts and bolts" of student disciplinary actions and the building administrators' critical role in the process?
Restraint and Confinement of Students: Policies, Practices and Procedures Every Building Administrator Needs to Know - When is restraint or confinement of a studen appropriate, and what precautions must be taken by the building administrator to ensure that student and staff members are protected? Join us as we discuss the legal and practical aspects of restraint
Reducing Staff During Tough Economic Times: Attrition, Resignation, Retirement, Incentives and Reduction in Force - As the economy tightens, school districts are forced to look at cost saving measures, including reducing staff as a way to make ends meet. We will discuss the various ways in which reductions in staff can occur and will discuss the legal benefits and pitfalls of each.
